Where is Mount Rinjani?

Mount Rinjani (Gunung Rinjani) is located on the Indonesian island of Lombok. It is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia. The mountain is located within the Rinjani National Park, which is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Booking your Mount Rinjani Trek in advance

It’s best to book in advance for your trek up Mount Rinjani so that you can take advantage of pick-up and drop-off from the airport or ferry. I recommend booking with Ali Trekking, who is one of the biggest and most organized trekking companies in Lombok. They’ve been guiding treks up Mount Rinjani for many years and have great reviews on TripAdvisor.

Ali Trekking offers one-night, two-night, and three-night treks up Mount Rinjani as well as the Crater Rim option. I did the three-night trek and recommend that one as you get to hike around the crater rim rather than just up and down from the summit. Is trekking Mount Rinjani hard?

Trekking Mount Rinjani is considered to be a challenging and strenuous trek, owing to its steep inclines, long distances, and varying altitudes. The most popular route for the trek begins from Sembalun Lawang village, and the ascent to the summit takes around two days. The first day involves a steep climb up to the Plawangan Sembalun crater rim, which is about 2,639 meters above sea level. The ascent on this day can be demanding, with a constant incline and a distance of around 11 kilometers.

On the second day, the trek continues toward the summit, which is another 3.7 kilometers from the crater rim. The final ascent to the summit is a challenging climb that involves navigating through loose rocks and scree slopes. The duration of the trek can vary depending on the fitness level of the trekker, but it usually takes around three to four days to complete the entire trek.

How many days do you need to trek Mount Rinjani?

If you’re planning to trek Mount Rinjani, there are several options to choose from depending on your fitness level and time constraints.

Two nights: The most popular and recommended option is the 3-day, 2-night trek, which allows you to summit the peak, visit the crater lake, and relax in the hot springs.
Three nights: For those with a more leisurely pace, the 4-day, 3-night trek offers the same locations with more free time to enjoy the mountain.
One night: The 2-day, 1-night tour from Sembalun is the most challenging option, which includes the option to summit at sunrise. However, it’s recommended to give yourself more time on the mountain if you’re not in excellent shape. The 2-day, 1-night trek from Senaru is the easiest option (but still very, very steep), providing incredible views of the crater but not reaching the summit or lake. This trek is perfect for those who want to experience Rinjani but cannot handle longer treks of more than one night.

Best time for trekking Mount Rinjani

Mount Rinjani trekking opens from April until January. After January the rainy season kicks in and Mount Rinjani trekking can get quite dangerous. April and May are the quietest months of the year for trekking and actually, have some of the best views as the landscape is incredibly green. The best time to climb Mount Rinjani would be in May to enjoy the best views and quieter crowds.

What are my favorite pieces of hiking gear?

There are four pieces of gear that I simply never forget when I go on a hike. These are four items that I using right now and this list gets updated every year! Here are my hiking essentials.

Black Diamond Head Torch: I can’t tell you how many times, I’ve arrived back from a hike unexpectedly late. I always keep this lightweight but strong headtorch in my bag for the unexpected.
Darn Tough Socks: These are the most comfortable hiking socks I’ve ever worn and last for years. They also have a lifetime warranty and you just send them in with a hole and they replace it no questions asked.

How to get to Lombok

Senaru is in the North of Lombok. This is a small town most trekkers base themselves in before and after their trekking adventures. I arrived in Lombok via ferry and headed straight north with three other friends. There are also flights directly to Lombok from Bali. Once you arrive to the airport or ferry port, you will need a private transfer or moped to reach the northern villages of Senaru or Sembalun to begin your Mount Rinjani Trek.

My Mount Rinjani Trekking Experience

Day 1:

We began our Mount Rinjani trekking experience crammed in the back of a truck with all the gear bouncing around. We wound through the mountainous roads of Senaru, crammed tightly by our heavy load until we arrived at the check-in counter. Here we signed our names and found out that there were 150 other people trekking that same day.

The trek began through some quiet farm fields as we felt the full force of the Indonesian sun. There was no shade and we were at the full mercy of the piercing heat. The reality of the trek began to hit us after an hour, knowing that we had 6 left today alone.

Lunch-time on day 1 was at a random shed with a bunch of other tourists around. Our guide laid out an orange tarp and we sprawled out, looking like we were on our way down after three days rather than fresh on day one. Lunch was rice, chicken, and vegetables with some local tea.

For each meal, our guides cooked rice or a noodle dish that was actually really tasty, especially considering they were carrying all of the cooking utensils, spices, sauces, and ingredients.

For the next 4-5 hours, we made our way along the trail up some mildly steep hills. This section was relatively long but more enduring rather than acutely difficult. The most surprising part of the hike on day one was the diverse scenery.

At times we felt as if we were inside a mysterious forest and at others, we were in a canyon, rocks on the floor and monkeys looking down on us. I definitely didn’t expect the inside of a volcanic crater to look anything other than a few bushes and some rocks but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

We arrived an hour before sunset at our camping spot. On the edge of an epic cliff, we pitched our tent, clouds well below us. The campsites are not clean, that’s the first thing we noticed. Trash lays all around, and toilet paper and human feces are scattered throughout the campsite and the surrounding areas.

It isn’t the guide’s fault or the trekkers really. For such a large-scale tourism operation the local authorities need to take responsibility and pay porters to carry out the trash and it would be my recommendation to have a dedicated drop toilet rather than having people dig holes everywhere and subsequently leave their trash wherever they please.

Trash aside, our camping spot was magnificent. We sat on the cliff edge watching the sun go down over the sulfur lake in the center of the volcano. We felt pretty good about ourselves after the first day but knew that we would be waking up at 2 am to begin the pilgrimage to the Mount Rinjani summit.

Day 2:

At 2 am we rolled out of our tents and enjoyed a pancake and coffee prepared by our porters and guide. After a few deep breaths of preparation and we went on the predicted 3-hour pilgrimage to the Mount Rinjani Summit.

This was the most intense period of the three-day Mount Rinjani trekking experience. With our head torches on, we battled to find our footing on the fine volcanic sand that paved the way. It was a case of two steps forward and one step back, which can get not only physically draining but mentally exhausting.

As we climbed higher and higher, the temperature began to drop. Our skimpy gloves and jacket our homestay owner had given us no longer kept us warm. The freezing wind was unforgiving and whipped across our faces. Our only warmth was hiding behind rocks or to keep moving onwards and upwards.

Along the way, we passed a couple who were crying and scared without their guide as the wind threw them about on the ridge. We passed others huddled behind rocks, taking a respite from the wild winds. Others marched on past us at an amiable pace. But the beauty of the pilgrimage is that whether you arrived first or last we were all destined for the same destination, and what a view it would be.

My sister and I arrived at the top, relieved the trek was over but astounded by the view. For the past four hours, we had been so focused on clambering up the mountain we had only stopped for brief moments to look at the view, which had been covered in clouds. Now at the top of Mount Rinjani, we could only look out in silence, in awe of the scale of the landscape and the scale of our achievement throughout the last 24 hours.

The climb down was much easier although with each step blisters and a bit of quadricep burn began to make the battle a little tougher. Plenty of slips later and some nice views inside the crater we made our way back to camp in just under a couple of hours. However, it was no time to rest!

After a quick breakfast, we packed up our gear and began clambering down the ridge towards the sulfur lake and the hot springs. As we had walked up in the cold hours earlier we had been dreaming of hot springs. However, now the hot sun was making the hot springs a little less desirable.

Nevertheless, we scrambled down the rocky path toward the lake. Looking out across the lake towards the active volcano inside of a volcano was mind-blowing! What wonderland was I in?

A short walk from the lake we found the natural hot springs. Temperatures of 40+ degrees meant we were steaming in the water and under the hot sun. It was an oven but the water felt so great on our feet and skin after the cold conditions earlier that morning.

We didn’t want to leave the hot springs. However, we had a 3-hour hike ahead of us to climb back to the top of the rim on the other side of the lake to camp. This was a painful part of the day. The legs were heavy we had been hiking more than not in the last 24 hours and it was starting to take its toll but our spirits remained high.

We arrived at the top of the rim and many others had already set up camp. We had run out of water due to a bit of communication error and bad planning by our guides, which meant we had to keep going lower for another hour to a natural water source. Our group was a little ticked about this as it meant more walking and no sunset on the rim. Shit happens and we laughed about it later although our guide wasn’t the best at delivering that news!

We ended up camping at a random spot surrounded by forest but we were all pretty tired so we ate and fell asleep straight away.

Day 3:

Our final day was just a straight trek down the hill. The burn in the quads was intense but we were in the shade of the forest canopy for most of the day. As we exited the hike after more than three hours we made one last stop at the coffee plantation, with a great view from above of Tiu Kelep.

BEST TIME TO VISIT NUSA PENIDA

This gorgeous island off the South coast of Bali is open all year round to tourists, but if you are looking for the best time to visit then it needs to be between the months of June through to August. During this time Nusa Penida is classed as being in their dry season which gives travellers the chance to explore around the island in a more pleasant environment. It is also nice to go in May and September if you are looking for more options.

Alongside knowing the best time to visit, you need to know how long you should visit for. Spending at least three days here is definitely needed so that you are able to enjoy all that the island has to offer, and if you have the chance to stay longer then you could easily spend a week here. Bali is one of the best places in the world to bring an action camera. Whether you’re learning to surf, visiting the raging waterfalls, or filming your floating breakfast (lol), having an underwater camera on hand is a great call. Backpacking Bag

To start, my go-to way to travel is a solid backpacking bag, like this. I live out of my bag, so the 75L capacity is great for me. For you, it might mean you can overpack to your heart’s content. If your trip to Bali includes backpacking through Southeast Asia, however, this might be the perfect size for you.

Weather in Bali

First things first, what are you packing for? As most of you know, Bali has a warm, tropical climate. But it also has two unique seasons which can affect what you bring.

Dry season runs from April to September, and brings great weather, but also great crowds. The temperature averages about 79 degrees Fahrenheit or 26 degrees Celsius, with humidity hovering around 80%. Expect it to be much cooler higher up in the mountains, though.

If you’ll be making moped trips to the mountain waterfalls or hiking up Mt Batur, you’ll definitely want warm layers. All around, May through August is considered the best times for a Bali vacation.

Wet season is from October to March, and boy is it wet. January alone receives 1 foot of rain (or 30cm) at the height of the rainy season. It’ll also be a bit more humid, but the temperature only increases by a degree or two.

Generally, good weather and sun can still be enjoyed with scattered short downpours in-between. There will be the occasional tropical storm, but for most well-prepared people, this season will have little impact on their daily activities. I’ve visited at the end of the rainy season multiple times and never had an issue.

Religion in Bali

Bali is a deeply spiritual place. The island is the only Hindu-majority province in Muslim-majority Indonesia and was home to mass migrations from the Hindu populations of Java. Many a tourist have accidentally planned a visit during Nyepi, the “Day of Silence” before Balinese New Year, and wondered why everything was shut down.

While the tourist beaches, cafes, and resorts are anything goes, it still does well to dress and act conservatively when visiting more local parts of the island. If visiting any temples, make sure to have your shoulders and knees covered. Both men and women can be required to wear a sarong when entering a temple, and it’s useful to pack one in advance. That said, most locals have a pretty relaxed attitude towards foreigners.

Money (hacks) in Bali

One of the worst things that can happen during a trip to Bali is getting your card details skimmed while using a tampered-with ATM. This is far more common than you’d expect. Or how about losing your wallet during a night out and having no access to your funds, or even as simple as losing your personal sim card and not being able to access your online banking to remove the hold on your account because you forgot to list your travel plans.

I’ve seen all of these happen and they’re mostly avoidable. Firstly, always remember to register your travel plans before you travel. If you do forget to do so, holds on your account can be a pain to remove if they require lengthy international phone calls.

Cash

Secondly, always carry some cash with you if you’re traveling internationally. Just don’t bring too much – and try not to keep it all in one place. I’ve been unfortunate enough to have a few hundred dollars stolen from a nice hotel room. Generally, a couple of hundred dollars in USD is useful, and you can usually get a better conversion rate for that than via ATM conversion rates.

ATMS

That brings us to my next tip, the ATMs. Card skimming is way too common in Bali, and a friend and I both lost a couple of thousand dollars by using the same compromised ATM.

One suggestion is to take out the money you expect to use before arriving in Bali, but the more realistic option is to just use ATMs inside banks. If you do use a standalone ATM, inspect it carefully. Particularly the slot where you’ll be inserting your card.

Cards

Most ATMs have pretty high transaction fees, however, so I suggest bringing a bank card that refunds ATM fees, and a credit card with no foreign transactions fees. Using a travel credit card with the built-in trip and baggage insurance like the Chase Sapphire Preferred is pretty handy, and it ticks the boxes of no foreign transaction fees and great rewards. Finally, bring several cards and keep them in separate places to help prevent the dreaded broke/stranded traveler. No one likes running out of money on vacation for any reason, especially a dumb one.

To sum it up, be smart about your money so you can focus on enjoying your trip.

What luggage to pack for Bali

This topic has been covered a lot by Bali packing lists for some reason. Personally, I’ve been traveling the world for 6 years with a backpacking bag and a carry-on camera bag and never had an issue. Unless you’re heading straight from the airport to a private car to a resort for the duration of your trip – I’d generally recommend the backpacking bag for everyone.

Just having one large backpack means you don’t have to lug your rolling bag over dirt roads or nicely manicured lawns. It also means you can catch a moped directly to the airport and skip the traffic which can unexpectedly add an hour to your international commute. Day Pack

Aside from your backpacking pack, a day bag is an essential part of the Bali traveler’s kit. It works hard as an adventure bag for waterfall hikes and cross-island missions, it doubles as a grocery bag and incognito drinks carrier and serves as a mobile office for co-working cafe days. Since the majority of people get around by moped, it’s much nicer to carry a backpack than worrying about purse straps sliding around.

This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.

Atuh Beach is situated in the eastern part of Nusa Penida Island. It is often visited along with the nearby ‘Rumah Pohon‘ or ‘Tree House’ attraction. It’s advisable to visit during low tide because high tide can cover much of the beach. The sunrise view from Atuh Beach is also quite spectacular.

Kelingking ‘T-Rex’ Beach

The Instagram famous coastal cliffscape, which truly does look like a T-rex doesn’t disappoint. I still remember the moment I laid eyes on Kelingking Beach. I watched the crystal clear water slowly form into a wave before crashing below us, in what seemed like slow motion.

We took a short trek down the spine of the T-Rex and took in the epic drop-offs down each side. This is definitely my favorite thing to do on Nusa Penida and is just one of those landscapes that make you feel small. It’s easily the most popular beach on Nusa Penida, and for good reason. Nusa Penida has so many amazing views making it hard to pick a favorite. Peguyangan Waterfall: Blue Stairs Hike

Peguyangan Waterfall is one of my favorite places to visit in Nusa Penida because it has a mix of everything. Up and down those steep blue stairs is a workout. Then you add in the spectacular coastal cliff views that are the trademark of the island. Finally mix that in with the tradition and culture of the sacred temple and the waterfall, which is a pilgrimage site and you have this awesome blend in one spot!

The hike down takes about 20 minutes, leading you down to the pilgrimage site. The sacred temple is based on the water blessing. I spoke to one of the locals who was going through his ritual. There are three spouts.

Seganing Falls

If you don’t like heights skip this trek. The path is at times less than half a yard in width. On one side is the giant vertical rock wall and on the other side a tiny wooden fence protecting you from certain death if you were to fall. The fence looked like something you would see on an old farm.

The trek was incredible, which made up for the waterfall. Once at the bottom of the trail, we were surprised to find a cascade of trickles running down the rock face.

It was an anti-climax after the crazy trek down. I would suggest this trek as it was truly one of my favorite things to do on Nusa Penida. However, don’t expect Niagara Falls at the bottom.

Crystal Bay Beach

Crystal Bay is probably the most popular beach on Nusa Penida for a number of reasons. It is the best sunset beach, facing directly west. This alone makes it a winner for people trying to have a sunset beer and watch the sun go down.

It’s also the jump-off spot for snorkel tours and is only a 30-minute drive from the main port, Toyapakeh. Most importantly, unlike many of the crazy beaches on Penida, you can snorkel and swim with relaxing conditions.

Crystal Bay features a beautiful sandy beach set against a backdrop of lush green hills. Its name comes from the incredibly clear, crystal-like waters. An offshore rock outcropping with a small temple adds to the beach’s scenic beauty. Crystal Bay is a well-known spot for snorkeling and diving, thanks to its vibrant coral reefs and rich marine life, which include the rare Mola-Mola (sunfish). Relaxing on the beach and enjoying the sunset are other popular activities.

Snorkeling at Toyapakeh

Snorkeling at Toyapakeh, Nusa Penida is an incredible underwater adventure that shouldn’t be missed. Toyapakeh is a popular snorkeling spot known for its vibrant marine life and crystal-clear waters. As you dip beneath the surface, you’ll be greeted by a kaleidoscope of colorful coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, including angelfish, parrotfish, and clownfish.

This awesome snorkel spot has a strong current. Our captain dropped us off and we hardly had to swim as the current slowly drifted us down towards a small cove. We were drifting on the edge of a huge drop-off with fish and coral in abundance.

Angel’s Billabong

Angel’s Billabong is one of the magical spots you can’t help but marvel at. A crystal clear tide pool cascades into the ocean on the east coast of Nusa Penida. Out in that ocean, Manta Rays cruise the coast at leisure. Angel’s Billabong is also one of the spots on the Ultimate Nusa Penida Day Trip Tour from Bali.

As with all tidal pools you need to arrive at the right time of day. If you visit Angel’s Billabong during high tide you will experience a very different pool than the one you see in photos. You will need to check the tide using a site like Magic Seaweed. Once you figure out when the low tide is, you should plan your itinerary around that. On the day we wanted to visit Angel’s Billabong the low tide was at 8 am so we arrived right at 8 am and it was perfect.

The Billabong is a remarkable formation. The crystal-clear water allows you to see the patterns and textures beneath the surface. In some areas, the water is deep enough for a little dip! It is a highly photographed spot on Nusa Penida because of how unique the landscape is.

Broken Beach

Broken Beach is an incredible little cove on Nusa Penida island. The highlight of the cove and the reason it is called Broken Beach is due to the archway that wraps around the bay allowing water to flow in and out from the ocean.

The arch at Broken Beach has been formed over many, many years and is now a true spectacle. From above the cove appears almost circular and closed in, however, at eye level, the arch is quite high. Unfortunately, there is no way down into the cove for a refreshing dip although you can get in the water at Angel’s Billabong around the corner.

Thousand Island Viewpoint (Pulau Seribu)

Firstly, you might be wondering what Pulau Seribu means and it actually just means Thousand Island. Thousand Island Viewpoint, located in Nusa Penida, offers a breathtaking panorama that leaves visitors in awe. This iconic viewpoint is perched atop a cliff, providing an expansive vista of the turquoise waters dotted with numerous small islands resembling a thousand islands, hence its name. From this vantage point, you can marvel at the stunning contrast between the deep blue ocean, the lush greenery, and the rocky formations.

Manta Ray Viewpoint

As you finish up at Angel’s Billabong it is common to walk around the corner to Broken Beach. The walk only takes 5 minutes but halfway through the journey is an archway made of trees. When you reach this archway don’t go through immediately! Head up the hill towards the coast on your right and look down into the ocean. This is where the Giant Manta Rays hang out.

We sat on the cliffs watching the Mantas cruise around and surface time and time again. It was a pretty awesome discovery and we have aptly named the cliff, ‘Manta Ray Viewpoint’.

Kelingking Beach

After trekking down the stairs from the Kelingking Beach lookout you will find another set of even steeper stairs on your right, which lead to the beach. When we reached the bottom of the stairs and hit the sand the waves were insane. It is a shore-break beach and the waves were barreling and dumping.

This isn’t a beach for novice swimmers and the sets came out of nowhere. Please don’t swim if you aren’t 100% sure you can handle the conditions. My friends and I body-surfed until the sunset. It was the most magical night of our time on Nusa Penida. Kelingking Secret Point Beach was and still is my favorite spot on Nusa Penida.

Kelingking Cliff Lookout

Here is a great little tip for enjoying Kelingking Secret Point Beach from a unique angle. Instead of hiking down the stairs, head to the right along the cliffs. There is a worn path along the cliff edge but no railing so be careful. Here you can find multiple epic viewpoints, with arguably a better look at the beach than the hike.

It’s an awesome spot for sunset and doesn’t involve any hiking for those of you out there looking for the easy option. We came back two nights later after our beach session down at the bottom and just caught the sunset up on these cliffs. Definitely one of the best sunset spots on the island of Nusa Penida and a unique angle of Kelingking Secret Point Beach.

Nusa Penida Treehouse (Rumah Pohon)

The Tree House (Rumah Pohon) on Nusa Penida has become one of the most popular attractions and one of the most popular places to stay! It is perched up on the mountain at Thousand Island (Pulau Seribu) viewpoint near Atuh Beach.

It is part of the Thousand Island viewpoint area costing only 10,000 rupiah to park and enter, which is less than $1 USD. The best part about this treehouse is that it is actually a house and you can rent it out for pretty cheap considering how popular this spot has become and how insane the view is.

Banah Cliffs

Banah Cliff Point in Nusa Penida is a hidden gem that showcases the unspoiled beauty of nature. Nestled along the rugged coastline of the island, this magnificent cliff offers awe-inspiring views of the turquoise waters and dramatic rock formations. If you’re seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, Banah Cliff Viewpoint should be at the top of your bucket list.

Diamond Beach Viewpoint

On the right-hand side of Atuh Beach is a staircase that leads up the hill. The viewpoint is next to Atuh Beach but looks out over the bay next door. You can get the Atuh Beach view from both sides but I assumed you guys would find that anyway.

This is just an epic little spot we stumbled upon and It’s a pretty epic viewpoint though so when you are at Atuh Beach definitely get up to this side of the beach and check it out. Here is a quick snap we grabbed looking down the coast from this spot.

Diamond Beach

Diamond Beach, located on the eastern tip of Nusa Penida Island in Indonesia, is renowned for its captivating natural beauty. The beach boasts an exceptional landscape characterized by pristine white sands, crystal clear turquoise waters, and towering cliffs. Its unique rock formations, reminiscent of glittering diamonds, give this beach its distinctive name. A steep staircase carved into the cliffs provides access to the beach, offering breathtaking panoramic views during the descent.

The most important rock though is the diamond-shaped rock in the shallows of the water. The beach is after all named after this diamond-shaped rock I believe.

Tembeling Beach, Natural Pool & Forest

Tembeling Beach, tucked away at the end of a thrilling motorbike journey through the woods, is a secret gem worth exploring. It’s a place you’d like if you’re up for an adventure that’s not crowded with tourists. On the way, you’ll come across Tembeling’s natural pools.

Imagine a scene straight from a jungle film – that’s what the Tembeling Forest looks like from inside the canyon. After soaking in that sight, you can move down the winding stairs leading to the Tembeling Natural Pools. There are two pools, with the first one being the largest. Despite being surrounded by orange and brown cliffs, the water in the pool is surprisingly clear and blue.

Follow the trail further and you’ll reach Tembeling Beach. Although it’s not the best beach on Nusa Penida, it’s worth a visit. The beach is flanked by towering cliffs and has a small stretch of sand. While the sea here can be a bit rough, the natural pools offer a safer option for swimming. Be sure to keep an eye on the currents and stay safe.

Suwehan Beach

Suwehan Beach is a place that epitomizes Nusa Penida. You’ll find huge towering cliffs, crystal clear yet strikingly blue water, an insane staircase down to the beach and maybe a turtle or two. In 2018 an earthquake ruined the stairs but by the end of the year, the locals had fixed them enough to make the access possible yet very sketchy. Nowadays, Suwehan Beach is one of the top places to visit on Nusa Penida.

Abangan Hills Viewpoint

On the drive down to Suwehan Beach, keep your eyes out on the left for a little hill. I pulled my bike over and went for a look at the viewpoint, which is known as Abangan Hills. The viewpoint has a few trees on it and looks out over the many rice fields on Nusa Penida. It could be a great spot for sunrise but was still nice during the midday sun.

Saren Cliff Viewpoint

If you continue down the coast from Tembeling Beach, you will reach Saren Cliff Viewpoint. In fact, there is a shortcut road from Tembeling, which is pretty hard to explain and not on the maps. I’ll try. As you drive down towards Tembeling, halfway along you will see a road that goes up the hill on your left. This road is paved and will take you to Saren Cliff Viewpoint.

The drive there is pretty damn bumpy but that is nothing new on Nusa Penida. The viewpoint was, of course, empty but was such a chill spot to take in the towering cliffs. There was a sign for Saren Cliff Viewpoint that suggested it may have been more popular at some stage. There is a swing and some beautiful big trees but the highlight is sitting on the edge of cliffs in the middle of nowhere enjoying the grandeur of Nusa Penida.

Gamat Bay Snorkeling

Everyone does the Manta Ray snorkeling on Nusa Penida, and for good reason but the island also has some INSANE snorkeling spots. Gamat Bay is probably top of the lot from what I have experienced but I’m sure there are others too. Our boat driver asked me where we wanted to go after the Manta snorkeling and I looked at his poster.

I had snorkeled at Crystal Bay and done the Toyapakeh drift before so I pointed at Gamat Bay and told him we could have a look there. What a decision! We jumped off the boat, and immediately realized the water at Gamat Bay is much colder than at Manta Point and Crystal Bay. The depth ranged from a few meters closer to shore all the way down to a perfect free-diving depth of 5-20 meters.

Puncak Mundi (Highest Point on Nusa Penida)

The highest point on Nusa Penida is Puncak Mundi, which is a series of traditional temples. I decided to make the journey up the very, very steep hills to check it out. When I arrived, not much was happening but it was a cool little spot to check out. I would try and visit during prayer or an event so you can see all of the candles and rituals in action. The drive up here is incredibly scenic.

Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave

Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave, located on Nusa Penida Island in Indonesia, is a significant cultural and spiritual site. This unique cave temple is renowned for its sacred atmosphere and intriguing architecture. To enter the cave, visitors must climb through a narrow opening that resembles the mouth of a mythical creature. Inside, they will be mesmerized by the vastness of the cavern and the intricate Hindu shrines and offerings adorning the walls.

The cave is considered a place of prayer and meditation, attracting both local devotees and curious travelers seeking a spiritual experience. Exploring Pura Goa Giri Putri Cave offers a glimpse into the island’s rich cultural heritage and provides an opportunity for quiet contemplation amidst its mystical ambiance.

Teletubbies Hill Viewpoint

I have to admit, I almost didn’t visit because of the name. It sounded like some touristy photo spot. However, when I did finally make the drive into the mountains to see what this spot was all about, I was pleasantly surprised. Nusa Penida is known for its epic coastline. However, there are actually many rice fields and rolling hills throughout the island, which is actually really large.

Teletubbies Hill is a great spot to understand just how diverse the landscapes are on Nusa Penida and it was incredibly interesting flying the drone here scoping out all the different contours, valleys, and canyons in this region. Here are a couple of my favorite shots from Teletubbies Hill.

Pandan Beach (Hike from Crystal Bay)

If you are feeling a bit adventurous there is a path that leads you from Crystal Bay up and over the hill. What you will discover on the other side of the hill next door is the beautiful Pandan Bay. It is safe to assume you will be the only person there as most people just hang out at Crystal Bay.

To journey from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida, you can take a quick boat ride, which typically lasts around 10 to 15 minutes. Similar to the route from Nusa Penida to Nusa Lembongan, the boats operate regularly, departing from Nusa Lembongan’s main beach areas, such as Mushroom Bay or Jungut Batu, and arriving at the designated harbor points on Nusa Penida, such as Toyapakeh or Sampalan. You can book these boat transfers through local tour operators or accommodations on both islands. What is it Like Driving on Nusa Penida?

The roads in some parts are fantastic but to get to many of the waterfalls and beaches the roads were pretty crazy. At times we were just driving over small rocks. If you aren’t confident on a moped this could be some terrain too heavy to handle. If you aren’t confident in driving, you can rent a car on Nusa Penida with private driver, which is a good option to visit multiple spots safely in a day with a group of friends.

There were a few spots where locals asked us to pay a small entrance or parking fee. For example, as we left Kelingking we had to hand over 50 cents for parking even though nothing was mentioned beforehand. Just enjoy the views hand over the small fee and continue on your journey.

Drive safe kids! This was me on my first solo trip to Indonesia!!! I learned my lesson and drive a lot safer now and have had no troubles while on the Nusa Islands.

Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. Nusa Lembongan Travel Tips

How to get to Nusa Lembongan from Nusa Penida

To travel from Nusa Penida to Nusa Lembongan, you can take a short boat ride that usually takes around 10 to 15 minutes. The boats depart regularly from the designated harbor points on Nusa Penida, such as Toyapakeh or Sampalan, and arrive at the main beach areas of Nusa Lembongan, like Mushroom Bay or Jungut Batu. Devil’s Tears

Exploring Devil’s Tears is the best thing to do on Nusa Lembongan in my opinion. The outcrop sucks the water in before it explodes out with a boom, creating the tears of the devil. Not only does it make the devil cry but the spray also creates a rainbow on many occasions. Devil’s Tears may get a little touristy but it’s one of my favorite things to do on Nusa Lembongan.

- Extensive moped adventures across the island, which is larger than Nusa Lembongan
- Relaxed atmosphere with eco-stays and vegan cafes
- Highlights include Kelingking Beach, Manta Rays near the coastline, and good snorkeling opportunities
Cons:
- Some roads may be rough for mopeds in certain areas
- No access to cliff jumping on Nusa Ceningan
- Slightly higher hotel prices compared to Nusa Lembongan (still affordable)

Personally, if you enjoy epic cliff views and exploring the land on thrilling moped adventures, Nusa Penida may be your preference. Nusa Ceningan is a small tropical island, which is part of Bali in Indonesia. The island is nestled between the popular Nusa Lembongan and the large island of Nusa Penida. The trio of islands is an awesome spot to explore and get away from the craziness of mainland Bali.

Nusa Ceningan was the adrenaline spot of the Nusa Islands in my opinion with cliff jumping around every corner. I spent five nights in Nusa Lembongan and day trip to Nusa Ceningan, which is accessible by bridge. Ceningan is quite a small island and I didn’t even rent a moped, instead, I opted to discover the coast on foot with my two mates.

How to get to Nusa Ceningan from Nusa Penida

Catch a boat to Nusa Lembongan: Start your journey by taking a boat from Nusa Penida to Nusa Lembongan. The boats operate regularly and depart from designated harbor points on Nusa Penida, such as Toyapakeh or Sampalan. These boats will take you to the main beach areas of Nusa Lembongan, like Mushroom Bay or Jungut Batu. I think when considering whether to visit Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Ceningan, the beauty is that you can visit both. You can think of these two islands as just one island because they are connected via the yellow bridge. You can walk or ride your book over the bridge with no fee. The distance across both islands is very small so it’s convenient to cliff jump on Nusa Ceningan and then hang out at a beach half an hour later on Nusa Lembongan. You won’t need to make the choice of either Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Ceningan… you can have both.

Two Best Activities on Nusa Penida

In this section, I’ll share my two personal favorite activities on Nusa Penida.

The Nusa Ceningan Blue Lagoon

Nusa Ceningan’s Blue Lagoon is a remarkable natural attraction, boasting dazzling, clear, turquoise waters. This cove, nestled against the cliffs on the island’s southwestern tip, is not just a feast for the eyes, but also a hotspot for adrenaline junkies due to its famed cliff-jumping spots. However, visitors should proceed with caution because of fluctuating sea conditions. The vivid color palette of the lagoon and the surrounding cliff vistas provide an ideal backdrop for photographers.

But the Blue Lagoon isn’t merely a sight to behold. The entrance of the cove offers prime spots for cliff jumping. With jumps from approximately 4m, 6m, 8m, and 13m, the spot caters to a range of bravery levels. The water was so deep that the bottom seemed too distant to be a concern.

Mahana Point Nusa Ceningan

Mahana Point cliff jump, Nusa Ceningan’s prime hangout location, provides an overhang of rocks jutting out into the sea. It’s a peaceful location for a restaurant and bar, complete with a 10m and a 5m diving board, along with a ladder for safe re-entry.

Mahana Point offers a range of activities to engage in post-lunch or dinner. From surfboard rentals to enjoy the waves off the bar, to the thrilling cliff jumps which are the main draw, there’s never a dull moment here. Additionally, it serves as an excellent vantage point for the sunset, ensuring that the buzz at this bar and restaurant never dies down.

Equipped with both a 10m and a 5m diving board, Mahana Point cliff jump offers a safe and convenient experience with a ladder for easy exit, unlike the scramble necessary at the nearby Blue Lagoon Cliff Jump. However, they do charge for each jump. The 10m jump costs around 50,000 rupiah, and the 5m jump comes at 25,000 rupiah, translating to roughly $4 USD and $2 USD respectively. While these prices may have gone up at the discretion of the owners, spending $5 for a single ocean jump might seem a bit high to some.
