Coconuts Beach Club Resort and Spa

Although there are more overwater resorts in Fiji, let’s move on to Samoa. Here we have Coconuts Beach Club Resort and Spa, a charming overwater retreat on the island of Upolu. With only 6 overwater Fales (as they’re called in Samoa), it’s among the smallest resorts to make the list. That said, these Fales are sure to make an impression. With expansive indoor-outdoor living spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows, the suites provide panoramic views of the lagoon. Glass floor panels and direct ocean access are par for the course, as are oversized tubs and beautiful stone floors. These cozy villas would make for beautiful overwater bungalows in Hawaii.

Guests can indulge in spa treatments at the Coco Spa, dine at Mika’s restaurant and bar, take a dip in the resort pool, or book excursions at the activity desk. Where are the Best Beach Bungalows in Hawaii?

Given the cost of oceanfront real estate on popular islands like Oahu and Maui, the best beach bungalows in Hawaii are located on the less-developed islands of Kauai and Big Island (Hawaii). The less-crowded nature of these islands provides the opportunity for larger bungalows closer to the sea. Examples include the oceanfront bungalows at Kona Village on Big Island and the oceanfront infinity pool villas at Timbers Kauai. These are my two favorite resorts to stand in for overwater bungalows in Hawaii.

Best Overwater Bungalows in Hawaii Four Seasons Hualalai

What are the Best Overwater Bungalows near Hawaii?

Personally, I’d opt for one of the many overwater resorts in French Polynesia. As the birthplace of water villas, they’ve redefined the art of overwater living. I recommend one of the boutique resorts like  Le Taha’a or Le Bora Bora by Pearl Resorts for a more intimate experience. But for those who want the best views of Mount Otemanu and the best villas, I’d recommend Four Seasons Bora Bora or The St Regis Bora Bora to stand in for overwater bungalows in Hawaii.

A row of overwater bungalows in French Polynesia connected by a wooden dock.

Are there any Affordable Overwater Bungalows near Hawaii?

The overwater bungalows near Hawaii are very pricey. For a more affordable overwater stay, I’d recommend booking something in Panama, Belize, or the Philippines. My favorite affordable overwater bungalow near Hawaii is Maitai Polynesia in Bora Bora. If there were ever overwater bungalows in Hawaii, I’m sure they would be very expensive!

When should I book a Vacation in Hawaii?

Hawaii makes for a great travel destination year-round, but for the best weather, March – September is your best bet. However, the busy tourist season of mid-December – March is best avoided to enjoy a less crowded holiday and better prices.

So, if you’ve been wondering do you need a rental car in Maui, this article has the full breakdown with all the pro’s and con’s.

First and foremost, most travelers want to know about the best place to hire a car in Hawaii. When I rent a car in Hawaii, I recommend and I always use Discover Cars, and you can see why below.

ULTIMATE GUIDE: DO YOU NEED A RENTAL CAR IN MAUI

The best part about Discover Cars? You can add full coverage insurance for only about $11 per day.

By the end of this blog post, you’re going to feel comfortable with the entire Hawai car rental process and have some helpful tips about driving a rental car in Hawaii that will boost your confidence with driving in Hawaii.

General Info for whether you should rent a car on Maui

The first thing to consider is whether you’ll actually need a car. If you’re planning to spend most of your time in one specific area, like Lahaina or Kihei, then you may not need a car at all. You can easily get around these areas on foot or by using public transportation.

However, if you’re planning to explore more of the island, then renting a car with Discover Cars may be necessary. Keep in mind that Maui is a large island and it can take a long time to get from one place to another. Renting a car will give you the freedom to explore at your own pace.

Another thing to consider is the cost of renting a car when thinking about the question do you need a rental car in Maui. You can expect to pay around $50-100 per day for a mid-sized car. If you’re planning to rent a car for an extended period of time, be sure to ask about discounts. Some rental companies offer weekly or monthly rates that can save you money in the long run.

WHERE TO BOOK A RENTAL CAR IN MAUI

When considering where to book your rental in Maui, there are a few options.

  • Pre-book online before your arrival and pick up the car at the airport
  • Pre-book online before your arrival but pick up the car downtown(sometimes cheaper)
  • Organize with a vendor in Lahaina or at your hotel (the most expensive option)

The smartest option is to pre-book your car rental and pick it up from the airport. The taxi from the airport to your hotel as of 2023 is about $25-75 depending on which hotel you are staying at. That is almost the price for entire day of car rental when booking online with Discover Cars.

I have found Discover Cars has the cheapest for Hawaii Car rentals, as well as the cheapest Hawaii driving insurance at less than $11 per day. The key is to book at least 2-3 weeks in advance for their super low rates. If you book the day before it will be much more expensive.

Pros and Cons of Renting a Car in Maui

Renting a car on Maui can be a great way to see the island and get around. It can also be a hassle and a expense. Here are some pros and cons of renting a car on Maui.

PRO: You can go where you want, when you want.

With your own set of wheels, you can come and go as you please. If you want to explore beyond the resort area, a rental car is a must. You can also avoid the hassle and expense of taking taxis or shuttle buses everywhere.

CON: It can be expensive.

Renting a car on Maui can add up. You’ll have to pay for the rental itself, as well as gas and parking. If you’re not careful, the cost of renting a car can easily outweigh the cost of taking taxis or shuttle buses. However, I’ve found if booking in advance on sites such as Discover Cars, you can get a really good deal if you book more than two weeks ahead of your trip.

PRO: You can avoid the crowds.

With a rental car, you can avoid the crowds and the traffic. You can also take your time exploring the island without having to stick to a schedule.

CON: You may have to deal with traffic and parking.

Despite the ability to avoid the crowds, you may still find yourself stuck in traffic. And parking can be a challenge, especially in crowded areas. You may also have to pay for parking, which can add to the cost of renting a car.

PRO: You can explore more of the island.

A rental car gives you the freedom to explore all that Maui has to offer. You can visit popular tourist spots like Haleakala National Park and Hanauma Bay, or venture off the beaten path to find hidden gems.

CON: You may have to deal with unexpected expenses.

Car rentals can sometimes come with unexpected costs, such as mandatory insurance fees or unexpected surcharges. Discover Cars charges just $11 per day for full coverage insurance in most cases. Be sure to read the fine print before you rent so you know what to expect.

Overall, renting a car on Maui has its pros and cons. It’s important to weigh the costs and benefits before you decide whether or not it’s right for you.

Cost of a Rental Car on Maui

If you are planning on taking 3 to 4 trips from your hotel to any of Maui’s top destination, you can can easily justify having a rental car for the entirety of your stay. You’ll easily spend that much on Uber or tour buses to the beaches and attractions you want to visit. If you only plan one on or two outings from the hotel throughout your week-long stay, you could just opt for tours or taxi’s and you will save some money. I’ve found that booking on Discover Cars 14+ days in advance means you will get a great deal on a car rental making it worth the cost!

Having a rental car on Maui gives you the freedom and the liberty to spontaneously explore hidden gems, deviate from planned routes, and immerse in the unexpected adventures that the island has in store. This is often the higlight of travel rather than being on a planned group tour or part of a big shuttle bus.

Cost is an inevitable factor in holiday planning and it’s imperative to note that the average car rental cost on Maui for a standard car floats around $60/day. However, during the peak holiday periods, prices can steeply escalate, expecting you to shell out approximately $185/day. Despite these varying rates, when one considers the distances from popular resort locations to the top attractions on Maui, a rental car is likely to be not only a cheaper alternative compared to using services like UberX but also significantly faster than opting for the Maui Bus, ensuring your journey is not only memorable but also economically savvy and time-efficient.

In conclusion, whether or not you need to rent a car on Maui depends on a few factors. Consider how you will be getting to the island, what you want to do while you are there, and the cost of a rental car before making your decision.

What to Know Before Renting a Car in Maui

Although Maui is a relatively small island, there is a lot to see and do, and having your own set of wheels can definitely make getting around a lot easier. With that said, there are a few things you should know before renting a car in Maui.

First and foremost, unless you’re planning on doing a lot of off-roading, you really don’t need a 4×4 vehicle. The roads on Maui are well-maintained and most are paved, so a standard sedan or SUV will suffice. Second, if you’re planning on doing any driving around the Haleakala crater or up to Hana, be aware that the roads can be quite winding and narrow in places. Take your time and drive cautiously.

Another thing to keep in mind is that parking can be somewhat limited on Maui. If you’re staying in Lahaina or Kihei, for example, you may have to park your car on the street. Be sure to read the signs carefully so that you don’t end up getting a ticket. And finally, although it’s not required, we recommend getting collision damage waiver (CDW) insurance when you rent your car. This will protect you in case of any accidents. Luckily Discover Cars offers full coverage for just an extra $11 a day if you don’t already have automotive insurance.

So, do you need a rental car in Maui? It really depends on your individual circumstances. If you’re staying in one place and don’t plan on doing much driving, you can probably get by without one. But if you want the freedom to explore the island at your own pace, then we say go for it! Just be sure to keep the above tips in mind.

Finding the Right Car for Your Maui Vacation

  1. Compact and Economy Cars:

Parking Your Rental Car in Maui

You’re planning a trip to Maui and you’re wondering if you should rent a car. There’s a lot to consider when making this decision and we’re here to help. In this blog post, we’ll cover everything you need to know about parking your rental car in Maui.

Maui is a beautiful island with plenty to see and do. Because of its size, it can be difficult to get around without a car. Public transportation is available, but it can be unreliable and expensive. Renting a car is the best way to see all that Maui has to offer.

When you’re planning your trip, be sure to factor in the cost of renting a car. Prices will vary depending on the type of car you choose and the length of your rental. Be sure to compare prices from different companies before making a decision.

Once you’ve rented your car, you’ll need to find a place to park it. Parking can be difficult to find in Maui, especially in the busy tourist areas. Be sure to allow yourself extra time to find a parking spot. You may also want to consider paying for a parking pass, which will allow you to park in designated areas.

When you’re ready to return your rental car, be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to get to the rental facility. Maui is a popular destination and the rental companies are often very busy. Be sure to follow all instructions from the rental company so that you can avoid any penalties.

Parking your rental car in Maui doesn’t have to be difficult. With a little planning, you can easily find a place to park your car and enjoy all that Maui has to offer.

Alternatives to Renting a Car in Maui

There are a lot of things to consider when planning a trip to Maui. One of the biggest decisions is whether or not to rent a car. While a car rental can certainly be convenient, it’s not always the best option. Here are some alternatives to renting a car in Maui that you may want to consider.

Public Transportation

The Maui Bus is the public bus system on the island and it covers a lot of ground. There are day passes available for purchase, which can be a great option if you’re planning to do a lot of exploring. The buses run on a pretty regular schedule, so it’s easy to plan your activities around them.

Taxis and Ride-sharing Services

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are another way to get around Maui without renting a car. They can be a bit more expensive than the bus, but they’re often more convenient, especially if you’re not sticking to a strict schedule.

Biking

Maui is a great place for biking, thanks to the mild weather and beautiful scenery. There are plenty of rental places where you can pick up a bike for the day, and there are also a number of tour companies that offer guided biking tours.

Hiking

Hiking is another popular activity on Maui, and there are plenty of trails to explore. If you’re not up for a challenging hike, there are also some easy trails that are suitable for all fitness levels.

The beach

Of course, one of the best things to do on Maui is simply to relax on the beach. There are plenty of beaches to choose from, and you can find one that suits your needs, whether you’re looking for a place to swim, sunbathe, or simply take in the stunning views.

Road Rules for Maui

Do you need a rental car on Maui? That depends on your plans and where you’re staying. If you’re staying in Kihei, Lahaina, or Kaanapali, you can get by without a car since these areas are fairly urban and have good public transportation. However, if you’re staying in more rural areas like Hana or Molokai, you will definitely need a car to get around.

Here are some general road rules to keep in mind while driving on Maui:

  • The speed limit is 35mph in urban areas and 25mph in rural areas.
  • The legal blood alcohol limit is .08, but we recommend being extra careful since Maui roads can be winding and unfamiliar.
  • Wearing a seatbelt is required by law.
  • Using a cell phone while driving is banned, unless you’re using a hands-free device.
  • Be cautious of pedestrians, especially near crosswalks and schools.
  • Driving around animals is common on Maui (especially chickens!), so just use caution and don’t swerve suddenly to avoid them.

Overall, just use common sense and be aware of your surroundings and you’ll be fine driving on Maui. And remember, always buckle up!

Questions to Ask Before Renting a Car on Maui

Are you visiting Maui and thinking about renting a car? If so, there are a few things you should know before making your reservation. Here are four important questions to ask before renting a car on Maui.

1. Do I need to rent a car?

This is the first and most important question you need to ask yourself. If you’re planning on staying in one place and just doing day trips, then you probably don’t need a car. However, if you’re planning on exploring the island and going to different beaches and attractions, then a car will definitely be helpful.

2. Where should I rent a car?

There are a few different options when it comes to renting a car on Maui. You can either rent from a major rental company at the airport, or you can rent from a smaller, local company. We usually recommend renting from a local company, as they often have better prices and more flexible policies.

3. What kind of car do I need?

This depends on a few factors, such as how many people you’re traveling with and what kind of activities you’re planning on doing. If you’re traveling with a large group or doing a lot of off-roading, then you’ll need a bigger car. But if you’re just two people and sticking to the paved roads, then a smaller car will do just fine.

4. How much does it cost to rent a car on Maui?

This is another important question to ask, as prices can vary greatly depending on the time of year and the type of car you’re renting. In general, expect to pay around $50-100 per day for a mid-sized car. However, prices can go up during peak season (December-April) and if you’re renting a luxury car.

I have hiked the Stairway to Heaven Trail on Oahu, Hawaii and I have several friends who hike it regularly. This blog post will be updated regularly with information that many people share with me about the topic so that you can be best prepared for your hike up the infamous Stairway to Heaven hike on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Know that this route is also known as the Haiku Stairs and is technically illegal at this stage although there is a lot of controversy surrounding this amazing hiking route.

In this blog post, I will cover everything you need to know about the Haiku Stairs hike including its history, alternate routes, current status, security, incline, height, distance, best weather conditions, the gear you’ll need, and how to get there.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN HIKE UPDATES

UPDATED January 2025: Fines have been reported as approximately $1000, with people receiving them recently. Security has been upgraded and there is now not only security but also a frequent (but not constant) police presence. Police waiting at the top of the hike to book hikers is very uncommon but has happened on a few occasions. Basically, it is a high-risk hike, illegal and you may get fined, although the risk is significantly lower if you hike the backway on the Moanolua Valley Trail.

*This post was originally written in 2016 and the situation has changed since then regarding security, fines, and the condition of the stairs but I update the post frequently based on reports from locals. The section at the bottom of the post provides updates on the current situation.

THE FOUR MOST POPULAR OAHU TOURS

THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN HIKE ON OAHU, HAWAII

The Stairway to Heaven hike on Oahu, Hawaii, also known as the Haiku Stairs, is possibly the greatest attraction on the entire island. A grueling 3,922 stairs lead up the imposing mountain ridge, often at an almost vertical incline, with only a handrail to catch you from falling into the valley below. It may sound dramatic but at times that is the situation. However, it is not the most dangerous of all the hikes on Oahu.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN HIKE/HAIKU STAIRS – A SHORT HISTORY

Originally the stairs were built in 1942 by the U.S. Navy as a top-secret facility for transmitting radio signals to ships that were sailing in the Pacific Ocean. The stairs were then opened to the public until 1987 when they were deemed unsafe because of disrepair. Many residents of Oahu have fond memories of hiking up the Stairway to Heaven years ago (legally).

The city of Honolulu spent almost a million dollars repairing the stairs and was considering re-opening the stairs in 2002 but resident complaints and safety concerns halted the re-opening and the stairs have been closed ever since. Basically, politics and money got in the way of what is one of the most epic hikes on Oahu. That hasn’t stopped locals, hikers, and tourists from sneaking past a guard who is posted at the bottom of the stairs to experience the thrilling 4000-long climb along an 18-inch wide staircase reaching heights of above 2000ft.

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN HIKE: IS IT WORTH THE RISK?

I had been on Oahu for over a year and despite contemplating the hike many times, the rumor of a $600 possible fine (now increased to $1000) had scared me off. I was a college student trying to pay rent and that kind of fine could incur real financial trouble for me. I listened time after time as my friends would recount their experience of an amazing sunrise hike on the stairs or about how they managed to sneak past the guard through the bamboo forest. I was also enticed by the many photos I had seen highlighting this extraordinary climb and views. I didn’t want to miss the unique opportunity of experiencing the Haiku Stairs and taking my own photos of this unbelievably scenic hike before I left Hawaii, despite knowing it would be breaking the law.

As time passed, the instances of the $600 fines being handed out seemed to have become more commonplace. More and more hikers began meeting the police at the bottom of the hike after they had descended back down the stairs. My nervousness about being caught kept my desire to attempt the hike at bay.

I had two friends visit and had promised them if the opportunity arose we would try and do the craziest hike they could imagine so they were already pumped for the Stairway to Heaven. One fateful night, the weather seemed perfect and we made a last-minute decision to go for it.

HAWAII HIKING PACKING LIST

Many people come unprepared for hiking on Oahu and that’s why there are so many rescues. Make sure you at least have the basics and you will be prepared for bad weather or any mishaps on the trail. A headlamp, rain jacket, and good hiking boots or shoes are the three main pieces of gear you need. Below are my four Hawaii hiking essentials.

  • Arcteryx BETA AR Rain Jacket: This is my go-to rain jacket. It’s super light, folds down into a tiny ball, and protects brilliantly in a storm. This one never leaves my backpack.
  • Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX Hiking Boots: For the best ankle support, waterproofing, and durable exterior I’m a fan of tough but light hiking boots like these Salomons for my adventures.
  • Black Diamond Head Torch: I can’t tell you how many times, I’ve arrived back from a hike unexpectedly late. I always keep this lightweight but strong headtorch in my bag for the unexpected.
  • Darn Tough Socks: These are the most comfortable hiking socks I’ve ever worn and last for years. They also have a lifetime warranty and you just send them in with a hole and they replace it no questions asked.

MY EXPERIENCE HIKING UP THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN ON OAHU

We were dropped off in the neighborhood at 2 am in the morning on a very clear night, and only a few light clouds hovered over the mountains looming above. As soon as we stepped out of the car a neighbor came rushing out of his front yard yelling at us with his phone pressed angrily to his ear. Startled by the old man walking towards us we quickly shuffled away to the “main entrance” only to find someone jumping out beaming a flashlight at us. This was chaos.

Well, that was an interesting start! We crept off in the opposite direction toward an alternate entry point, well aware that the old man had been on the phone with the guard or quite possibly the police, warning them of our arrival. This heightened our sense of adventure and fear considerably.

Walking through the neighborhood with our crew of six, as quietly as possible, our presence soon became blatantly obvious as a chain reaction of barking dogs blew our cover. With no other choice, we hurried down the street to a small lane that led up a hill. We had to clamber over a barbed-wire fence one by one that was very close to a neighboring home. I can definitely understand why neighbors would be annoyed with people jumping on this fence every night. I did feel some remorse for the neighbor trying to get a good night’s sleep but our mission was going ahead despite the barbed wire fence.

From here we had to sneak our way through knee-high undergrowth as quietly as six, tired and anxious people in the dark can. A silhouetted figure appeared in the foliage twenty yards behind us and began yelling but we quickly scuttled towards the path and out of the shrubbery. We were now approaching the guard and we could make out a car in the distance. Already on private property and having passed multiple no-trespassing signs we were understandably quite nervous.

No one was standing by the car so we walked straight past it and towards the stairs. I felt a huge relief as we began our ascent up the stairs as it is commonly known that the guards and police don’t usually climb the stairs to confront people. It felt like we were safe and could now enjoy our 3 am hike up the Stairway to Heaven.

In 2015 a huge storm damaged several sections of the stairs to the point where they were severely mangled. It isn’t incredibly dangerous but it definitely makes things interesting. A number of the stairs are loose and each step had to be taken with that in mind.

We hiked without headlamps and the full moon guided us up the narrow, damp staircase. I stopped frequently to peer down at the Highway that continually got smaller and smaller as we climbed toward platform one.

Stairway To Heaven Hike

The full moon illuminated the stairs ahead of us and the smell of damp metal covered our hands as we made sure to always have a good grasp on the slippery railing. We continued to make our way carefully up toward platform two, where we found an abandoned cabin with old machinery lying inside. It felt as if we were in a post-apocalyptic movie, the last survivors searching for any other signs of life.

ABONDONED CABIN Stairway To Heaven Hike

After almost two hours we were moments from reaching the summit. The final section of the hike has boards rather than stairs, which create a catwalk 2000 ft in the air on top of a sharp ridge.

THE TOP OF THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN HIKE!

At the summit, we found another old cabin with huge antennae on top. We wandered around, investigating our playground in the clouds before we returned to the warmth of the bunker to wait for the sun to rise. Packing a spare change of clothes was a game-changer. Being able to put on a dry shirt and jacket made a huge difference in combating the wind at the summit.

Stairway To Heaven Hike

After a short wait, the sky began to glow a pale blue, then a purple, and all of a sudden the sun attempted to break through the haze. It wasn’t the sunrise of the year but it shone yellow and orange throughout Haiku Valley and lit up the stairway we had just climbed.

Stairway To Heaven Hike

THE FOUR MOST POPULAR OAHU TOURS

More than thirty people witnessed the sunrise with us and we watched them begin the descent down the group by group. We began to contemplate when we should head down and which way we should go. The Moanalua Trail is a 6-mile route down that would help you avoid the guards but you would also miss the views of the stairway on the way down and it would take 3-4 times as long.

THE JOURNEY BACK DOWN THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

We decided to follow the crowd and headed down the stairs, only one old man remained at the summit when we left. The hike down was a photographer’s dream with hundreds of prime photo opportunities. We weren’t in a rush so I decided to hike most of the descent by myself so I could enjoy composing and setting up different shots.

It is amazing to walk up in the dark and then see where you hiked as you descend down in the daylight. It took us less than two hours to make it to the beginning of the stairs. We could see the guard’s red truck parked at the foot of the stairs where it was in the morning but we decided to take the risk.

MEETING THE GUARD ON THE WAY DOWN

In the end, we didn’t clamber through the bamboo forest as many others do, we took a deep breath and walked straight up to the guard. He smiled and exhaled his cigarette smoke as he smirked, “I’ve called the cops, they must not have come,” as he began laughing to himself.

It was his response that made us feel better about the whole situation. Even the guard knows it is a bunch of politics stopping adventurers from hiking this trail. He had probably hiked it a bunch back in the day and kind of just sent us on our way with a ‘hurry up and get out of here’ kind of look. Keep in mind the situation has escalated a lot over the years and I’m sure the guard in 2021 may be a little less casual.

Winding our way in and out of bamboo shoots we emerged from the forest inside an elementary school to the dismay of a worker, who had clearly seen it all before. We apologized put our heads down and followed his orders to take the gate out. We were almost free.

Making our way towards the final gate, we spilled into the neighborhood and saw no signs of any police or angry neighbors. We knew we were literally out of the woods. I couldn’t believe we had just hiked the Stairway to Heaven.

This is truly one of the wonders of the world and makes you feel incredibly small, almost like an ant climbing a hill. The atmosphere of the hike is dreamy, and eerie, and feels like Jurassic Park. It is definitely something you should attempt when visiting Oahu if you are up for the challenge.

I recommend that if you do this hike, try as hard as possible to attempt it with someone who has been before. Show respect for the neighbors as much as possible and know that you are likely trespassing and breaking the law depending on the route you take.

Stairway To Heaven Hike

ALTERNATE ROUTE: THE BACKWAY OF STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

As I mentioned earlier in the blog post, there is an alternate route down and therefore, also an alternate route up. You can completely avoid the guards and security at the start of the trailhead if you follow the Moanalua Trail. The hike begins at the Moanalua Valley road trail and is a 9.3-mile round trip. You will get muddy and it is not one of the easy hikes on Oahu. Click the link above to read my full blog post about that trail.

Although it is legal, it is still a tough hike. There are multiple sections with rope climbs and very steep, muddy ascents. However, it is still technically illegal to be up on the top platform at the satellite even though that is the top of the legal Moanalua Ridge Trail. Classic bureaucracy at play as that makes zero sense.

Once you reach the top you can walk down the stairs and get some cool photos. In fact, you can go quite a far way down the stairs because the guards and police usually only wait at the bottom. I think they are too lazy to chase people up the stairs every morning.

So, for the photographers out there, you can get all of the angles and shots you have dreamed about… without the high risk of an encounter with security or the police. This route also does a good job of not waking up the neighbors as you jump fences and sneak around at 3 a.m. Keep in mind, according to the rules, if you step foot on the summit you are breaking the law. So you just can’t get caught at the summit and you are all good. I’ve only heard a few instances where an undercover cop was at the summit and fined everybody who set foot there. It’s ridiculous but that’s a head’s up on the rules I’m aware of.

I highly advise you guys to hike Stairway to Heaven this way. You will likely avoid a possible fine of up to $1000 and not risk getting involved with the police. You won’t piss off the poor neighbors who have to deal with everyone running around their neighborhood each morning. You will still get the same shots of the stairs as you would going the other way just with a bit more effort. You also get to hike Moanalua Trail, which is an awesome hike too!

If you are interested in climbing the back (legal) way up to the summit you can contact @mike.karas on Instagram and chat with him about when his next tour is running.

SHOULD THE STAIRS BE PULLED DOWN?

There have been several possible solutions thrown around about the future of Stairway to Heaven in Oahu, Hawaii. How could it be possible to make the hike open to the public and also respect the neighbor’s right to privacy and safety in their own yard? Here are the options that have been discussed so far in the media, forums, and by the state.

In late 2021, a bill was passed to tear them down despite overwhelming public support from local residents and even the neighbors to find a different solution that works for everyone. But the suits in the city decided to tear it down instead of repairing it despite it being one of the most popular attractions on the island.

  • 1. Charge tourists/out-of-state visitors $50-100 to hike the stairs while the hike remains free for residents of Hawaii. The money can be spent on creating a small parking lot, maintaining the trail, and creating safe entrance and exit points.
  • 2. Require all people to purchase a permit for $10 from the Parks and Recreation Department before hiking the Stairway to Heaven. This paper would need to be shown at the entrance to the stairs or checked at any time during the hike. This would take the liability away from the state and is similar to the rules and regulations for camping grounds.
  • 3. Paid tours with guides could remove the liability from the state and put the responsibility on tour companies who would need to act responsibly and safely with their clients. This isn’t a great option for residents who don’t necessarily want a guide.
  • 4. Close the hike, pull down the stairs and the liability is then gone. Unfortunately, this won’t ever work because people will still hike up to the summit and without the stairs, there may be a higher risk of injuries or fatalities for hikers.
  • 5. Use a lottery system similar to other national parks, which allows only a small number of lucky lottery winners into the park each month.

In September 2023, a company called Nakoa Companies won the bidding as the company to pull down the stairs for a massive $2.5 million. This was just after the metal frame structure at Koko Head Crater cost $500,000 to remove and replace with a weird metal platform. This is the furthest it has progressed to be removed in a long time despite being debated and heavily politicized for a long time. You can be sure someone, somewhere is profiting and there is some money flowing under the tables surrounding this removal project. If you do a poll of all residents, you’ll find that the majority don’t want it torn down and it is part of an agenda. The Friends of the Haiku Stairs group have been doing their best to keep the stairs from being removed for years and are actively fighting it in court.

What do you think the best solution could be? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

WHERE IS THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN?

The map below shows the pin location of the satellite at the top of the stairway to heaven on Oahu. From here you will have to decide whether you trespass and jump fences or attempt the Stairway to Heaven trail from the back entrance. I highly encourage the latter.

DEATHS ON THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

Considering this hike is dangerous enough to pay millions to tear it down, you would assume it has been the center of many deaths. Keep in mind popular hikes in the USA, such as Angels Landing have recorded 20 deaths to date as of 2024. However, if you look at the Haiku Stairs also known as the Stairway to Heaven, its death toll is much lower than you may expect.

The most well-known death on the Haiku Stairs involved singer Fritz Hasenpusch in 2012. However, he didn’t fall but actually had a heart attack. While it is a tragic incident, it is an insignificant data point when considering how dangerous the condition of the trail is.

If you look at another popular hike in the USA, Half Dome in Yosemite, you will see some more remarkable statistics. There have been more than 20 deaths on Half Dome, and if you count the trail leading up to Half Dome, the number is actually closer to 60.

A road on a foggy day in hawaii.

IS THE STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN HIKE SAFE?

There have been countless rescues on the Stairway to Heaven. These rescues are actually quite difficult for the rescue crews due to the lack of a helicopter landing area and the weather conditions around the mountains. There’s no doubt about that. However, when it comes to deaths the statistics just simply don’t reflect this as a dangerous hike.

Even when we look at rescues, it makes sense to compare the percentage of climbers being rescued compared to total visitors. It would be very interesting to see those figures compared to the number of injuries on popular ‘legal’ hikes on Oahu such as Diamond Head, Koko Head, and Lanikai Pillbox. Keep in mind, that Lanikai Pillbox has had more deaths from falling off the trail than the Stairway to Heaven. Koko Head and Diamond Head Hike have more rescues per year than the Stairway to Heaven Hike.

Once you start looking at the actual facts, rather than photos of a ‘scarily steep staircase’, it’s easy to see that this is in fact a campaign of fear to tear down the stairs. If it is based on public safety, we would spend 2.5 million dollars to tear down the stairs to save zero lives due to the fact that none have actually been lost on the stairs due to falling or the trail condition.

If you don’t believe me, just look into how many hikes have been closed over the last 20 years on Oahu due to ‘safety’. Then, go take a trip through the Alps in Europe and see what is open to the public. Once you have, you’ll likely agree that this ‘tear-down’ isn’t about protecting the public but about money and liability. The worst part of the whole saga is that the decisions are being made by people with no interest in hiking.

Diving with sharks is the type of activity that you do once in a lifetime. Your friends simply won’t believe it and your mother will call you crazy. However, here on Oahu, it is one of the most popular activities for tourists to experience swimming with sharks up on the North Shore. In this guide, I will share with you all of the best places to go shark diving without a cage on Oahu (and with a cage) and what each different tour operator has to offer compared to the others.

Will you swim with sharks on Oahu WITH or WITHOUT a cage?

a couple of sharks swimming in the ocean

SHARK DIVING ON OAHU WITH OR WITHOUT A CAGE?

There are two main types of Oahu shark diving tours for you to choose from. Despite what you might be thinking, both are pretty safe. I’ve done both multiple times.

WITH A CAGE: The first option is to be inside a cage as the sharks swim around you.

WITHOUT A CAGE: The second option is to be cageless and snorkel above the sharks and free-diving down to be amongst the sharks.

I personally enjoyed both experiences and found the shark encounter with the cage to be more interactive as the sharks were closer and more inquisitive. However, the cageless shark encounter on Oahu was much more peaceful as the sharks circled below. I would recommend both and many visitors to Oahu who love sharks will actually do both tours aswell.

Below, I will detail the different tours available and why you might choose one Oahu shark diving experience over the other.

NORTH SHORE SHARK ADVENTURES: CAGE DIVING EXPERIENCE

The North Shore Shark Adventures company is one of the biggest on the island and they have an impeccable record and high professionalism. This tour takes you out from the harbor at the North Shore for an incredible shark cave diving experience on Oahu.

This tour by North Shore Shark Adventure is by far the most affordable on the island and the only tour under $100 per person. The tour runs for two hours and the experienced crew will lead you through the following itinerary.

  • Head off from the North Shore boat harbor to the shark-viewing spot.
  • Along the way, it’s likely to spot dolphins, turtles and whales depending on the season.
  • Listen to the briefing about how to behave in the cage and a short overview of shark behavior.
  • Enter into the shark cage with your snorkel on and enjoy an observing the sharks.

The cage is half in the water and half out so you can always raise your head above water. You never need to swim and simply hold onto the cage while breathing through your snorkel. It’s not difficult at all and very easy even if you aren’t a good swimmer. With unbelievable water clarity, you will be able to see Sandbar, Galapagos, and maybe even Hammerhead Sharks.

ONE OCEAN SHARK DIVING – WITHOUT A CAGE

Swimming with sharks is one of the most unique activities to do on Oahu. Imagine being in the water, snorkeling, and free-diving with a ‘shiver’ of sharks circling below. This may sound extreme but it’s what this Oahu shark dive experience is all about with the team from One Ocean Diving.

This is no average shark diving tour. One Ocean Diving is all about shark conservation and helping visitors understand sharks and what we can do to protect them. That’s why you’ll find a marine biologist (or two) on board.

It may sound a bit dangerous but it is very controlled and they have a perfect safety record. With your snorkel gear on, you will hold onto a line and watch the sharks circling below. You will have the opportunity to free-dive down towards the shark with the supervision and guidance of your expert instructor. The free-diving part is optional.

Swimming with sharks on Oahu is one of the most awesome experiences you can have on the island and I highly recommend it!

NOTE: Those two tours above are definitely my top-rated tours for shark diving on Oahu and I’ve personally experienced both of them multiple times! However, there are a few other tours that are highly recommended for swimming with sharks on Oahu and I’ll share those with you below.

OAHU PELAGIC SHARK DIVING with ISLAND VIEW HAWAII

Operating out of Haleiwa on the North Shore, Island View Hawaii is another company running shark diving tours ‘without’ a cage. Island View Hawaii teaches visitors how to communicate with sharks in order to coexist peacefully together in the ocean.

This 2-hour tour runs out of the North Shore boat harbor before ferrying you out to the 250ft deep shark diving zone. An experienced instructor will guide you as you hold onto a rope. You can expect to swim with sharks but also keep an eye out for dolphins, whales, turtles, and other marine life on this incredible pelagic dive.

HAWAII SHARK ENCOUNTERS

The final tour I will recommend in this blog post is with Hawaii Shark Encounters for their Oahu Shark Cage-Diving experience.

This 2-hour experience up on the North Shore is an adrenaline-filled activity where the experienced team takes you out from the harbor to their permanent cage site. Here, with depths of more than 200ft, you will be submerged into the cage with snorkel gear on.

Don’t be afraid, but sharks will be circling the cage right around you in a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You might not expect me to say this but it is actually quite a peaceful experience rather than a scary activity. You can get some seriously cool photos and videos from inside the cage with the sharks coming right up close to investigate.

IS SHARK DIVING SAFE ON OAHU?

Shark diving on Oahu and in general is a relatively safe experience. The sharks you are likely to encounter in Hawaii and specifically on these tours are Sandbar Sharks and Galapagos Sharks, which are less aggressive. While it is possible to see Hammerhead Sharks and even a rare sighting of a Great White Shark, it is uncommon.

One Ocean and North Shore Shark adventures have a perfect safety record and despite what you see in the movies, sharks are relatively peaceful and just going about their business in the ocean. They aren’t naturally aggressive towards humans and that’s why the guides are important to monitor the behavior of the sharks and the tourists to make sure both sides are calm and staying that way.

WHAT SPECIES MIGHT YOU SEE WHILE DIVING WITH SHARKS ON OAHU?

  • Sandbar Shark: This is the most commonly sighted shark year-round and is quite peaceful. Don’t be surprised to see thirty or more of these sharks circling below.
  • Galapagos Shark: It is relateivley common to come across a Galapgos Shark while diving with sharks on Oahu.
  • Hammerhead Shark: This species is a little less common but not something unusual to Oahu
  • Great White Shark: Each year there are Great White Shark sightings in Hawaiian waters, which are most likely to occur in the winter months.
  • Whale Shark: Oahu doesn’t see many whale sharks but sightings do happen. It’s much more likely to spot a whale shark on other Hawaiian Islands such as Niihau, Lanai and the Molokini Islet.

GEAR YOU NEED FOR SWIMMING WITH SHARKS ON OAHU

Your tour operator will provide you with a mask, snorkel, and fins and may even be able to provide you with a wetsuit. Most snorkelers will just wear boardshorts, bikinis, or bathers as you will only be in the water for 20-30 minutes whether in the cage or out of the cage. They will also provide you with a towel for after you get out of the water.

Just wear your flip-flops and bathers and don’t forget to bring reef-safe sunscreen.

SHARK MYTHOLOGY IN HAWAII

Shark or “Mano” in Hawaiian, is still central to the culture of the native Hawaiians and is featured in many legends. Hawaiians today still revere the shark and honor them as ancestral familial Gods of long ago. They are one of many central figures in Hawaiian mythology and are featured in countless legends throughout the Pacific. The shark God Kamohoali`i guided his sister Fire Goddess Pele on her journey as she escaped a feud with her sister which resulted in the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. This tour takes you on a journey to see one of the many forms of sharks, the descendants of Hawaiian folklore, and witness their agility and gracefulness as they glide by just inches away from you. All this and a breathtaking view of Oahu’s North Shore are part of the Hawaii shark tour.

HOW TO GET TO THE NORTH SHORE BOAT HARBOR

No matter which tour you choose, they will both begin from the North Shore boat harbor. There is usually enough parking there but I wouldn’t leave any valuables in the car. The check-in station is at the harbor and they will load you up into the boat. To get to the harbor on the Haleiwa Harbor it takes about an hour depending on traffic. Make sure you give yourself some breathing room because if there is a jam or an accident it could increase your transit time by thirty minutes or more. I’ve included a map below with a pin location of the Haleiwa Harbor.

What are my favorite pieces of gear for the beach?

There are three pieces of gear that I simply never forget when I go on a beach adventure. These are three items that I using right now and this list gets updated every year! Here are my beach essentials.

  • Quick-Dry Towel: A quick-dry towel is a must for travelers. It hardly takes up any room and dries in seconds.
  • Osprey Ultralight Dry Sack: The beach can be a great place to ruin your precious gear so having this ultralight dry sack for cameras, phones and valuables mean you have a safe place to store everything.
  • GoPro Hero 12: The best and easiest way to capture your underwater and snorkeling adventures.

WAHIAWA HILLS TRAIL

In this blog post, I’ll share everything you need to know about hiking the Wahiawa Hills Trail in central Oahu, Hawaii. It’s an easy(ish) loop with a few little tricks and turns, highlighted by a couple of interesting river crossings.

WAHIAWA HILLS TRAIL DETAILS

  • Hike Distance: The Wahiawa Hills Trail in Oahu, Hawaii, spans 4.8 miles (7.5 kilometers) from start to finish, taking hikers through a diverse range of landscapes, including lush tropical forests, streams, and waterfalls.
  • Hike Duration: On average, it takes hikers around 3 to 4 hours to complete the entire trail, depending on your fitness level and the number of breaks you take to admire the scenery.
  • Hike Difficulty: The Wahiawa Hills Trail is rated as moderate in difficulty due to some steep sections, rocky terrain, and uneven ground. Hikers will also need to cross streams and navigate through muddy patches, so sturdy footwear is recommended. While the trail is suitable for most hikers, beginners or those with mobility issues may find some sections challenging.
  • Hike Incline: The Wahiawa Hills Trail has an incline of approximately 450 meters, with a maximum elevation of 450 meters above sea level. Hikers should be prepared for some steep climbs and descents along the way.

If you’re staying in Waikiki and want to hike the Wahiawa Hills Trail, the easiest way to get there is by car. From Waikiki, head towards the H1 West Highway and take exit 8A towards Wahiawa. Follow the signs for Whitmore Avenue and turn right onto California Avenue, which will eventually turn into Puninoni Street. The trailhead is located at 2681 Puninoni Street, and there is limited parking available along the road.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE WAHIAWA HILLS TRAIL

The Wahiawa Hills Trail is a great forest loop in central Oahu. It’s just a 20-minute drive from Haleiwa Town, which means it’s a great adventure to combine with some North Shore vibes after the hike.

I set off on this hike expecting a moderate forest loop but it was actually a bit more of an adventure than I expected. A few steep and slippery descents as well as two river crossings made this hike a little more wild than expected. However, overall it was a forest loop suitable for most hikers with average fitness.

The trail starts off in the suburbs at Puninoni Street. Here you will see a signed entrance. There isn’t much parking but there is always the possibility of parking in the local neighborhoods.

The trail immediately immerses hikers into the forest, where giant stringy bark trees tower over the trail. The path is not obvious throughout this route so it is best to stay on course by using a GPX track or a local hiking app.

After just a few hundred meters in the forest, the trail has a very steep descent. In wet weather, this can be slippery but I visited after a few days without rain so enjoyed easier conditions. That was until it rained during the end of my hike.

Often hard to notice but always winding through the trees, the path now delves down towards the river for one of the three crossings.

This first river crossing is the simplest of the three as there are a few stones, which are conveniently placed for making the crossing. However, don’t cross the river until you visit the small waterfall down the trail to the right. It’s a shot 30-yeard out-and-back walk and you will hear the waterfall from the crossing.

The route now heads across the river and begins to wind its way uphill. There are lots of landslides and fallen trees throughout this part of the hike with some ducking and weaving necessary.

Through the forest, the trail continues to lead hikers uphill in truly serene surroundings. I passed just one fellow hiker on this route and it’s a very quiet and calm atmosphere compared to many of the hikes near Waikiki.

There’s no true ‘summit’ on this route but at around the halfway mark, you will reach a nice plateau with a view.

The trail now begins to descend to the river. It’s quite slippery and very steep. It actually started to rain on me right here during my hike, which was inopportune timing given how slick the clay becomes when wet.

Down at the water’s edge, it can actually be quite hard to find the ‘correct’ crossing. The AllTrails map led me to a part of the river that was quite high and I had to remove my shoes and socks to cross. Obviously, the water levels will vary throughout the year, but it’s a factor to be mindful of. I noticed a crossing that came before mine although it also looked as if the stones were slightly submerged. When it doubt, just walk through the river and wet your shoes or take them off. Don’t try and jump on the slippery rocks.

The trail continues to ascend through the forest from the river and climbs up and over another hill. The scenery is so dense that it is quite disorientating in the forest to find your bearings. Be wary of this and the importance to use a map or at least having Maps.me downloaded on your phone.

There was one last river crossing before the final ascent. This crossing was also too deep and I had to remove my shoes again! I didn’t expect to see such a beautiful river in this area when I began the hike but it is quite stunning, like a tropical lagoon.

The trail now joins back up with the start of the loop and retraces the first kilometer of the hike back to the parking lot. The loop has been completed and the Wahiawa Hills Trail is done. I hope you enjoyed this hiking guide and the photos.

Lulumahu Falls is a popular hiking destination for both locals and tourists on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Despite its popularity, the waterfall retains its natural beauty and offers visitors a peaceful escape into the lush greenery of the surrounding forest. The short hiking trail leading to Lulumahu Falls is a mild trail although it can get muddy. The waterfall itself is a magnificent sight to behold, with its cascading waters and tranquil pool at the base.

HIKING TO LULUMAHU FALLS

In this guide, I’ll share everything you need to know about hiking to Lulumahu Falls, what to expect, and how to get there.

LULUMAHA FALLS HIKE DETAILS

Lulumahu Falls is a popular hiking trail located in the lush rainforest of Oahu, Hawaii. Here are some key details about the hike:

  • Hike Distance: The Lulumahu Falls hike is approximately 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) long, taking hikers through a tropical forest with streams and bamboo groves.
  • Hike Duration: The hike typically takes about 2 hours to complete, depending on your hiking speed and the number of stops you make to take in the scenery.
  • Hike Difficulty: The Lulumahu Falls hike is rated as moderate due to some muddy sections and uneven terrain. Hikers will also need to cross streams and navigate over rocks. This hike is suitable for most hikers, but may not be recommended for the elderly or beginners.
  • Hike Incline: The hike has an incline of approximately 160 meters, taking hikers to an elevation of 305 meters above sea level.

HOW TO GET TO LULUMAHU FALLS TRAILHEAD

For hikers interested in exploring Lulumahu Falls, there are a few parking options available. The most convenient parking area is located on Pali Highway, near the intersection with Nuuanu Pali Drive. From here, hikers can access the trailhead by walking up the road and taking a left onto a dirt path near a small guardrail. It is recommended that hikers arrive early to secure a parking spot, as space can be limited.

As for the distance from Waikiki, the parking area is approximately 8 miles (12.9 kilometers) away from Waikiki and can take anywhere from 20-30 minutes to drive depending on traffic conditions.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE LULUMAHU FALLS HIKE

There are a few entrances to the Lulumahu Falls Hike but they all connect after a few hundred meters. I suggest downloading the trail map from AllTrails so you know which turns to make and where to begin.

This easy hike on Oahu began with a scenic walk through a lush forest with towering bamboo plants and dense vegetation. It’s amazing how quickly you can leave the Pali Highway behind and be completely surrounded by green forest.

The trail had some early decisions to make with a few t-intersections. There were some slight inclines and rocky terrain but nothing to worry about. As we continued along the path, we were greeted with the peaceful sound of a flowing stream and several river crossings.

The path cris-crosses the stream three times in total but it could be more or less depending on the exact route you choose. You’ll see that even though it is a simple trail, due to the number of intersections and offshoots.

As we approached the waterfall, the sound of the cascading water grew louder. When we finally arrived at the base of the falls, we were the only ones there. It’s unusual to have the falls all to yourself. The water was crystal clear and reflected the surrounding greenery. The pool at the base of the falls was perfect for swimming and a little respite from the hot and humid conditions within the forest.

The highlight of this Oahu hiking experience was swimming under the waterfall itself. The cool mist from the water added to the refreshing sensation and was the perfect way to cool off after the hike. We spent some time relaxing by the pool, taking in the beauty of the falls before making our way back to the trailhead.

In total, the hike took us just over two hours and was a fun little afternoon adventure.

SAFETY AT THE LULUMAHA FALLS PARKING LOT

This parking lot is a crime hotspot. This is mostly because thieves know that tourists will be gone for at least two hours when they park their cars here. It is very common to see broken glass from smashed windows on the ground here. The best way to stay safe and avoid this from happening to you is to remove every single item from within your car. Don’t leave any valuables in the car at all. I make sure the entire car is empty and there isn’t a single item for a would-be thief to be tempted by.

WHAT IS A GYROPLANE?

A gyroplane, also known as an autogyro, is a type of aircraft that looks similar to a helicopter but operates differently. Unlike a helicopter, a gyroplane’s rotor blades are not powered by an engine. Instead, they spin freely like a windmill as the aircraft moves forward, providing lift and stability. The engine powers a propeller, which propels the gyroplane forward. Gyroplanes can take off and land in short distances, making them ideal for recreational and sport flying. They are also known for their safety and stability, as they can glide to the ground in case of an engine failure. Gyroplanes come in various sizes and designs, from single-seat ultralights to larger models that can carry several passengers.

MY EXPERIENCE FLYING OVER THE NORTH SHORE

Flying over Oahu is always a magical experience with beautiful surf, jagged mountain ridges, and lush forests. I’ve experienced many helicopter flights over Oahu, many of which were ‘doors-off’ experiences. However, flying in a gyroplane over the North Shore of Oahu was the most immersive flight of them all.

an aerial view of a highway in the country.

The flights take off from the Dillingham Airfield, which is a fair drive from Waikiki. Here, I met up with Jay Eisenberg who runs the show. He is the owner of Skyland Air but also the pilot and mechanic. Jay is a flight instructor certified by the FAA with more than 20 years of experience in the field. He has worked as a professional skydiving instructor, completing approximately 4500 jumps. Jay also holds an FAA Repairman Certificate and is qualified as a Certified Rotax Mechanic and Autogyro Builder.

A gyroplane takes off by accelerating down a runway until the rotor blades generate lift. Unlike a helicopter, the rotor blades of a gyroplane spin freely and are not powered by the engine. Once airborne, the engine powers a propeller to propel the gyroplane forward. It was a pretty smooth take off and within seconds, we were high above Dillingham Airfield and already catching great views of the coastline.

The plan was to cruise along the coastline all the way down to Waimea Bay. We set off around 5 pm, which meant we had beautiful, soft lighting at the end of the day and would ease in towards golden hour to finish the flight. The weather gods smiled upon us with some perfect weather for the flight.

Our first major point of interest was the Waianae Mountain Range. Often there is solid cloud cover over these beautiful, rippled ridges but on this day they were relatively clear. A few clouds hung around Mount Ka’ala but otherwise, the views were perfect.

The journey continued down the North Coast as we flew over Haleiwa and the popular main strip of the North Shore. On the gyroplane, a small shield helps you hide from the wind but with just a light jacket on the temperature is not too cold. However, you are in an open plane with no roof and no sides to the gyroplane so you definitely feel exposed to the elements.

From the gyroplane, the reef is poignant and the cerulean blues of the Pacific Ocean are as vibrant as you will ever see. It was amazing to see the different reef structures, channels and some of the surf breaks from the air.

The turn-around point for this flight was Waimea Bay. It isn’t a huge distance to cover from Dillingham Airfield to Waimea Bay so we were able to cruise at a slow speed and take in the sights. That is probably one key difference to the circle-island helicopter flights that zip around the whole of Oahu in about an hour. This flight was definitely a slower-paced, North Shore flight.

We zipped around and began heading back toward the airfield. We now had the sun shining onto us from the right side and the perfect lighting made it a beautiful time for photos.

The final part of the tour was a little cruise alongside the lush mountain range near the airfield. We had the sun beaming onto us from directly in front and the green mountains glowing in golden light. These were absolutely dreamy scenes on Oahu’s North Shore.

To land a gyroplane, the pilot reduces the engine power, causing the aircraft to descend gradually. As the gyroplane approaches the landing zone, the pilot flares the rotor blades, increasing their angle of attack to slow down the forward motion. The gyroplane then touches down on its main landing gear, and the rotor blades continue to spin freely until the aircraft comes to a complete stop. It’s a pretty bizarre feeling to switch off the engine and glide down, it actually feels a lot like a parachute landing. The bump down back to the landing strip was pretty smooth and quite slow. It’s not like landing a plane at speed whatsoever.

That wrapped up our flight and we took a few nice photos of the gyroplane as the sunset.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HELICOPTER AND A GYROPLANE?

Although they may look similar, helicopters and gyroplanes operate quite differently. The biggest difference is the way their rotors generate lift. In a helicopter, the rotor blades are powered by an engine, allowing the helicopter to hover and fly vertically. In contrast, a gyroplane’s rotor blades are not powered by the engine but are instead free-spinning like a windmill. As the gyroplane moves forward, the blades generate lift, which allows the aircraft to take off and stay in the air.

Another significant difference is that a helicopter can fly vertically and hover, while a gyroplane cannot. However, gyroplanes have several advantages over helicopters. They are simpler, lighter, and cheaper to build and maintain. Additionally, they have a shorter takeoff and landing distance, making them ideal for recreational and sport-flying. Gyroplanes are also considered safer and more stable, as they can glide to the ground in case of an engine failure, while helicopters must perform an emergency landing or autorotation.

ALA MOANA BEACH PARK

Ala Moana Beach, situated just beyond the boat harbor at the westernmost edge of Waikiki, is a picturesque and popular destination for sunset in Waikiki. The beach boasts an expansive park, complete with tennis courts, walking paths, and even an outdoor gym, making it a hub for outdoor activities like surfing, yoga, and boot camps.

What really sets this beach apart is its calm and serene waters, thanks to the protective breakwater, making it an ideal location for swimming and sunbathing. With its soft white sands and vast size, there’s always ample space to soak up some sun and enjoy the tranquility of the ocean. The beach park gets a great sunset and the palm trees make for great silhouettes and sunset photography subjects.

DUKE KAHANAMOKU BEACH

After the Harbor at the western end of Waikiki is the first beach of the strip. It’s known as the Duke Kahanamoku Beach section of Waikiki Beach. Here you can find the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort, which is one of the most famous resorts on Oahu. It has an iconic, colorful mural on the side of the building.

Here you will find a man-made lagoon where you can swim and do water activities. However, it’s also the first part of Waikiki Beach and you can lay out on the sand, head out for a snorkel and even spot some Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles. This is also where the Atlantis Submarine Tour takes off from.

The beach and the entire lagoon are part of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort grounds although they are open for both the public to use. There are rarely any big waves here and it’s perfect for playing in the water with small kids. It’s a great spot for reflection photos and is an epic Waikiki Beach sunset spot.

FORT DERUSSY BEACH PARK

If you’re looking for the perfect place to watch the sunset in Waikiki, look no further than Fort Derussy Beach Park.

One of the reasons Fort Derussy Beach Park stands out as one of the best spots to catch the sunset is its location. Unlike many other beaches in Waikiki that are flanked by towering hotels, Fort Derussy Beach Park is nestled next to a large park. This means you can enjoy unobstructed views of the sky as the sun sets over the ocean.

While the beach itself is simple, you can rent umbrellas, chairs, and boards from nearby stands to make your experience even more enjoyable. And if you need a break from the sun, the park behind the beach offers plenty of shaded areas to relax in. With volleyball courts, walking paths, and lush landscaping, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. It’s considered one of the best places to watch the sunset in Waikiki.

THE FOUR MOST POPULAR OAHU TOURS

ROYAL HAWAIIAN BEACH

The Royal Hawaiian Beach is quite a famous strip of Waikiki. You might also know it as ‘Waikiki Beach Center’. It sits right in front of the iconic Royal Hawaiian Hotel, which is bright pink! This section of beach is just as beautiful as all of the other beaches of Waikiki but it’s action-packed.

Surf rentals are the hot item here as it’s a great spot to launch off to go out and surf some intermediate and beginner-sized waves on Waikiki Beach. It’s a great area to hang out, swim, go surf, and chill out under the palms. I rate this spot as one of the best Waikiki Beach sunset locations because it looks toward Diamond Head Crater as a backdrop.

PRINCE KUHIO BEACH

If you’re looking for a stunning spot to catch the sunset in Waikiki, Prince Kuhio Beach is a must-visit. This popular beach is renowned for its unique man-made pools, known as “The Ponds”, which offer a safe and peaceful swimming experience for families with small children.

At high tide, the ocean spills into these pools, creating a serene environment with no waves, making it an ideal location for young kids. Meanwhile, older kids can have fun playing around the concrete walls, enjoying the thrill of the waves crashing against them.

But that’s not all – Prince Kuhio Beach is also a popular spot for bodyboarding, with many people flocking to the beach to catch some waves beyond the protective walls.

One of the highlights of Prince Kuhio Beach is the pier, which is a prime location for catching the sunset. As the sun descends over the western end of Waikiki, the pier becomes a bustling lookout point for visitors and locals alike. And with the sound of waves crashing against the walls, it’s the perfect spot to sit back and take in the beauty of a Waikiki Beach sunset.

QUEEN KAPIOLANI BEACH

This is probably my favorite part of Waikiki Beach as it is the most chill, has the least tourists and there’s easy access to it. I’ve spent a lot of time living near Diamond Head and always enjoy going for a dip at Queen Kapiolani Beach after an outdoor gym workout at Kapiolani Park. It’s an easy-access spot for a great sunset on Waikiki Beach.

KAIMANA BEACH PARK (SAN SOUCI BEACH)

Kaimana Beach, also known as San Souci Beach is located in Waikiki right next to the Aquarium and the New Otani Kaimana hotel. Kaimana Beach is attractive as it isn’t nearly as crowded as Waikiki; it’s also nice and sandy. It is a little bit smaller, but there aren’t as many tourists. There is also a nice grassy lawn dotted with Palm trees straight back from the beach if you prefer laying in the grass or setting up a hammock. It’s one of my favorite Waikiki Beach sunset spots and the palm trees here are clustered together for nice silhouette photos.

DIAMOND HEAD BEACH

Diamond Head Beach extends along the south side of the island to the east of Waikiki. You just head towards Diamond Head Volcano past Kapiolani Park.  Diamond Head lookout offers a great walking path, a small grassy lawn and astounding views. We like to pack picnic dinners and have sunset dates here sometimes. One of my favorite places for sunset in Waikiki that you can actually drive to and get a park even at the last minute.

BEST PLACES TO WATCH SUNSET NEAR WAIKIKI

In this section of the article, I’ll share all of the top lookouts and viewpoints for a great Waikiki sunset. My favorite is Tantalus viewpoint but the Diamond Head Crater is pretty good too!

DIAMOND HEAD VIEWPOINT

The Diamond Head Crater Hike is one of the most popular walking trails on the island and although it is paved the whole way it is still a steep challenge and a hike with amazing views of Waikiki and the southern coastline of Oahu, Hawaii. This 3km out-and-back trail is one of the most ‘must-do’ activities for visitors staying in Waikiki!

It’s important to note that you need to be down by 6 pm so you can only catch the sunset at the top during the winter or as you are hiking down. But you can get the pre-glow over Waikiki. Diamond Head is open from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm and the last entry is at 4:00 pm. Gates Close at 6:00 pm but if you are walking down without a car, you can kind of push that limits a bit to stay up there for great sunsets on Oahu.

SUNSET DINNER CRUISE WITH LIVE ENTERTAINMENT

Sunset Dinner Cruise with Live Hawaiian Entertainment: If world-class entertainment and food weren’t enough on the beautiful beaches of Oahu, then why not take to the waters with the Oahu Sunset Dinner Cruise? This cruise will let you see the beauty of the colorful sunset in Oahu with a view of the island at night as the artificial lights glow and cover the place.

While onboard, you will enjoy the delicious buffet and some chitchats with other passengers. What the passengers will love is the round trip transportation they arrange for each and every one.

TANTALUS VIEWPOINT

Tantalus is one of the best spots for sunsets near Waikiki if you want to get away from the beach. A 30-minute drive from Waikiki will wind you up into the mountains where you can enjoy an incredible viewpoint over Waikiki, Honolulu, and Diamond Head. There’s a huge patch of grass here for onlookers to gather but be warned, it is a popular sunset spot on Oahu so it can get busy. It’s best to pack a picnic and some drinks as well as a picnic rug and watch as the light fades over the city. Do note, they close the gates shortly after sunset so don’t expect to hang out here all night.
